South Korea will bridge emerging, developed countries as G-20 Chair

South Korea will work reflect concerns and views of developing and emerging countries, including those of non-Group of 20 (G-20) member countries, for the sake of a sustainable growth, chief of G-20 preparation committee said Friday.

“We feel that (South) Korea is well positioned to play the role of bridging the advanced world and the emerging and developing world,” Sakong Il, president of the Presidential Committee for the G20 Summit, told an international forum held in Seoul.

“For the purpose of achieving the G-20’s macroeconomic objective of strong, sustainable, and balanced growth, the role of emerging and developing economies should be counted on,” Sakong said, stressing that the global economy may not see a sustainable growth when the development gap is widening.

The remarks came at the conference on financial reform, which the G-20 Committee hosted jointly with the Financial Stability Board (FSB).

The conference, held under the “Korea-FSB Financial Reform Conference: An Emerging Market Perspective,” is aiming at incorporating emerging market perspectives into the G-20 financial reform discussions.

At the conference, emerging markets’ experience with the Crisis, including that of South Korea, will be shared so that the G-20 member countries will better probe into ways to bring about a full- fledged recovery and stronger financial reform.

Meanwhile, the president, at his speech, also highlighted G-20 countries’ follow-up measures to previous commitments reached by leaders at the Toronto Summit held in June, calling on G-20 deputies to work on the matter at the deputy-level meeting to be held in Gwangju.

Starting Saturday, South Korea will hold a 2 day meeting of G-20 finance and central bank deputies during which the participants will prepare for major issues to be tabled at the November Seoul G-20 Summit.
