Iran, N. Korea, China and Japan, global economy top UN agenda for Obama
WASHINGTON, As the UN General Assembly convenes next week, concerns about Iran and North Korea remain on the agenda from last year, along with issues around the global economy, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Friday.
President Barack Obama will address the gathering in New York City on Thursday, and hold bilateral meetings with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, Gibbs said during a White House briefing.
Next Friday, Obama will attend a UN-hosted meeting on Sudan "to look ahead to the critical 2011 referendum," Gibbs said.
Obama also will host a meeting with leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in New York.
"The President has invited leaders of the 10 ASEAN member states as well as ASEAN's secretary-general to join him for the second-ever US-ASEAN leaders' meeting," Gibbs said. *** September 24th ~ Obama to host ASEAN leaders ...
Gibbs said he believed the US Senate would ratify the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia by the end of the year, marking "an important accomplishment on both nations' path toward reducing our stockpile of nuclear weapons." A longer list of scheduled events Obama will take part in while in New York, including additional bilateral meetings, will be announced on Monday, Gibbs said.
