Iraqi leaders probe government formation

IRBIL, north Iraq, President of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Massoud Barzani received on Sunday Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdul-Mahdi to discuss the obstacles facing the formation of a new Iraqi government.

The meeting, held at Salaheddin resort here in Irbil, the provincial capital of Iraq's northern semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, focused on the latest developments of the political landscape in Iraq, according to a press release issued by the KRG.

The two sides highlighted commitment to the provisions of the Iraqi constitution and laws in handling the political stalemate in the country since the March 7 legislative elections, the statement said.

The meeting, also attended by regional leaders, is part of Abdul-Mahdi's lobbying for his bid to premiership, informed sources told KUNA.

Abdul-Mahdi, a leading member of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) and National Iraqi Alliance (NIA), was nominated by NIA for premiership on Friday, September 3, in a bid to put an end to the political standoff.
