SEOUL : Delegates to a key meeting of North Korea's ruling communist party, which is expected to pave the way for the country's dynastic succession, arrived in Pyongyang Sunday, state media reported. The North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that delegates to the meeting of the Workers' Party of Korea "were greeted by the officials' preparatory committee of the WPK conference". KCNA's brief report did not give any further details about the conference, which is scheduled to open Tuesday after it was delayed from early September.
The conference will be the first major gathering of the ruling party since 1980, when current leader Kim Jong-Il was confirmed as the successor to his own father, the North's founding president Kim Il-Sung, who died in 1994. The 68-year-old Kim, who suffered a stroke two years ago and also reportedly has kidney problems, is widely expected to build support this week for an eventual takeover by his youngest son, Kim Jong-Un.
