Coalition member calls for national consensus on constitutional amendments
Baghdad, A member of the State of Law Coalition (SLC) headed by Nouri al-Maliki called on political parties to seriously consider constitutional amendments that would change the Iraqi parliamentary system to a presidential one.
Pointing to the seven month delay in government formation, Abbas al-Bayatti said that now is the time to raise the issue of the political system and “seriously consider” a national consensus on it.
"The consensus on the political process may open the way for a constitutional amendment to change the current parliamentary system to a presidential one” Bayatti said.
“The issue has been proposed repeatedly by some of the blocs, but rejected on the grounds of Iraq’s pluralism."
The SLC parliament member maintained that, "The presidential system is good and acceptable, but it needs to be the subject of a national consensus."
Despite intense negotiations among political leaders in Baghdad since the announcement of the electoral results seven months ago, no agreements have been reached concerning the three key governmental posts.
