American fighter planes to arrive in Baghdad soon
Baghdad, Sept. 25 (AKnews) - The leadership of the Iraqi Air Force announced on Saturday that the American-made plane, the F16 will reach Baghdad soon as part of a deal signed between Iraq and the U.S.
Commander of the Iraqi Air Force, Anwar Hamad Amin, said in an interview with AKnews that the process of importing U.S. F16 combat planes and attaching them to the Iraqi Air Force had reached an advanced stage.
“75% of the project has been accomplished so far”, he said
Kuwait voiced objections earlier this year when informed of Iraq's intention to buy the F16 fighters and demanded written assurances from Washington that Iraq would be prevented from using the fighter planes against the Kuwaitis.
"The deal rests on the provision of eighteen F16 planes”.
The leadership of the Iraqi air force revealed on Friday the arrival of three T-6 planes for basic training purposes, flown from the U.S. by Iraqi pilots to the Iraqi Air Force Academy.
“The T-6 aircrafts that arrived in Iraq recently were for training the Iraqi air force to pilot the F16” Amin said.
The Defense Ministry said on Thursday that the Iraqi piloted flights from the U.S. were a testimony to the competence of the Iraqi pilots and the efficiency of the T-6.
The U.S. began rehabilitating the Iraqi air force through the provision of a number of combat helicopters, which were used by the Defense Ministry in many of the battles that the Iraqi army fought against al-Qaeda across the country.
