The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has urged Iraq to form a new government following the parliamentary elections held last March.

The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has urged Iraq to form a new government following the parliamentary elections held last March.
In early June, Iraq’s highest court certified the election results in which in which the party headed by Iyad Allawi, a former prime minister, received more votes than the coalition led by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in the 325-member Council of Representatives.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Security Council that there is a disagreement over who has the right to form the next government and appoint leaders in the key positions. The Security Council voiced support for UNAMI.
After an attack on an Iraqi army recruitment center that killed dozens of military recruits on August 17, Ad Melkert, Special Representative for Iraq, stated that UNAMI will help Iraq respond effectively to those who continue to perpetuate instability and insecurity.
Meanwhile, the World Food Program (WFP) is expanding a cash-for-work program to help vulnerable and displaced people earn below-minimum-wage pay in short term agricultural infrastructure projects for a period of three months. While Iraq has a public food rationing system, an estimate 930,000 need food assistance.
A report on meeting UN Millennial Development Goals (MDGs) in Iraq was released in early August. It is part of an outreach campaign jointly launched by the UN and the Iraq government to promote the MDGs as part of the development efforts agreed upon in the 2011-2014 UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) signed in May.
