Talabani stresses need to implement strategic agreement with US

BAGHDAD, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani stressed on Wednesday the need to implement the strategic agreement between his country and Washington, while noting that a free and mighty developed Iraq will be able to play a significant role in the region.

This came during his reception of the credentials of newly-instated US Ambassador to Iraq James Jeffrey at Baghdad's Al-Salam Palace on Wednesday. Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari also accepted the new US envoy's credentials.

The new US envoy stressed readiness to practice all possible efforts in developing friendly and cooperative relations with Iraq in all fields, particularly those diplomatic, poltical, economic and cultural, according to an Iraqi presidential statement.

He also expressed his country's hopes for an Iraq of stability and security, reiterating US support of the political and democratic process of Iraq.

Jeffrey had previously held the post of Charge d'Affairs at the US Embassy in Iraq in 2005, as well as assistant head of the US mission in Baghdad in 2004, among other posts for the US in Kuwait and Turkey.

He is to take the place of former Ambassador Christopher Hill.
