Kurdistan parliament new legislative session to start in September
A Kurdish lawmaker said that Kurdistan parliament is to recommence its sessions after the summer recess at the beginning of September and nearly 20 bills are prepared for legislation.
Speaking to AKnews, Sherwan Haidari said that during the past two months of parliament recess the necessary reports for 42 bills which passed first reading were also prepared.
When the parliament resumes its sessions in early September "16 of the total 46 draft laws are in priority for a second revision," Haidari said, adding "the various committees in the parliament have also presented 20 new bills to the parliament."
On his part, Omar Abdul-Aziz, the head of the Kurdistan Islamic Union faction in the parliament, noted that the bills which have passed the first reading concern the high electoral commission in Kurdistan, the private universities, demonstrations, youth issues, integrity council, budget, Kurdistan Region ministries, the compensation for unwarranted detentions of individuals, and obtaining intelligence.
"The committees of the parliament are also to hand the reports for the bills when the parliament recommences meetings in September," he added.
Abdul-Aziz described the first round of the parliament as "active because 42 bills passed the first reading while some bills were ratified."
He also expected the next round to be even "more active."
The first parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region were held in 1992 following the Kurds’ uprising against Saddam Hussein’s regime and the creation of an autonomous structure in the Region. So far, three parliamentary elections have been held in Kurdistan.
Observers say the current round of parliament is highly active due to the strong presence of opposition groups.
