Iraqi’s international agreements risk cancellation

Baghdad, Approximately 56 international agreements are in risk of cancellation due to delay in forming the new government, said an official source from the outgoing government on Friday.

Five months after Iraq’s parliamentary elections the countries political groups have not reached a deal on the composition of the next government.

“The government held legal consultations yesterday about the validity of re-signing these important agreements," said the source, preferring to remain anonymous.

"The current government is automatically tied and has no right to conclude contracts and agreements because of the pressure exerted by the political blocs."

"There is no constitutional article that points out that the current government is a caretaker one, therefore it is trying to find a legal and constitutional method to re-sign the agreements," he added.

Al-Iraqiya list, led by former Priem Minsiter Ayad Allawi, agreed with the Shia-dominated Iraqi National Alliance (INA) to hold a meeting and discuss Maliki’s government and all the decisions taken by the government since March.
