8/23/2010 Iraqi President Talibani meets visiting US lawmakers
BAGHDAD, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani stressed importance Monday on his country's commitment and support to stability in the region, noting that political parties would overcome the current crisis and form a government of national unity.
President Talabani made his remarks during a meeting with visiting US Congressmen headed by Democratic Representative Brian Baird and Republican Representative Bob Inglis.
The Iraqi leader added that all political parties in the country are determined and keen on overcoming this difficult period and find solutions to Iraqi problems and to enter a new era that would rebuild and establish a free democratic Iraq.
Meanwhile, the President of the Islamic Higher Council Ammar Al-Hakim said that forming the upcoming Iraqi government is a national and internal issue.
Al-Hakim made his remarks during a meeting he had with US Ambassador to Iraqi James Jeffrey in Baghdad.
A statement by the Council said that the two sides discussed bilateral relations and obstacles facing the current situation in Iraq, including results of the recent successful election in the country.
The statement also quoted the Ambassador as saying that his country was proud regarding the democratic changes in Iraq, hoping that the upcoming formed government will be keen to best serve interest of the Iraqi people.
