Dabbagh: Iraq does not seek redrawing border with Kuwait

Baghdad, Iraqi government’s spokesman said on Friday that his country is not seeking to redraw the border line with Kuwait, adding that Iraq wants to develop economic relations with its southern neighbor.

The remarks came after media reports recently alleged that Iraq wants its common border with Kuwait to be re-demarcated.

Iraq had in the past accused Kuwait of extracting oil from the Iraqi side of the border.

Relations between the two countries have been tense in the past two decades after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990.

Ali al-Dabbagh said there were discussions and positive results in relation to the joint oil fields in the common border between the two countries.

"The Iraqi government assured Kuwait that it does not seek to approach the United Nations about the re-demarcation of the border as the media have reported,” Dabbagh told AKnews.

He added that in the future Kuwait will open up to Iraqi markets, hoping that the strengthening of economic ties will help the two countries to avoid political problems.

Kuwait continues to insist on its position for Iraq to remain under the Chapter 7 until it pays its compensation to Kuwait.

Iraq has been under Chapter 7 status since its invasion of Kuwait in 1990 when the United Nations’ Security Council recognized Iraq as a threat to international peace, imposing economic sanctions and constraints on the country.

"Iraq is looking forward to build political and economic relations in the future after the painful memories left by the previous regime in the invasion of Kuwait.”

The Iraqi Oil Ministry announced on Thursday that it will sign an agreement with Kuwait to resolve the problem of common oil fields between the two countries.
