8/1/2010 Al-Maliki: Decision to form gov''t must primarily be Iraqi
Baghdad, Prime Minister and leader of the State of Law coalition Nuri al-Maliki on Sunday discussed with a delegation from the White House bilateral relations between Iraq and the U.S. as well as efforts to form the Iraqi government.
According to a statement issued by his office, Al-Maliki stressed that the decision to form the government should be primarily Iraqi and away from foreign interference.
The statement added that the two sides discussed bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States and activating the strategic framework agreement.
It quoted Al-Maliki as saying that efforts to form a government as soon as possible were continuing, referring to the seriousness of the current stage.
Meanwhile, leader of the Iraqi List, majority parlimentary party, Ayad Allawi held a meeting at his office with representatives of the US National Security Council described as "important".
According to a statement issued by the office, Chief Negotiator Rafi Al-Issawi said that the meeting between Allawi and a high-level delegation from the US NSC was an important one.
The US delegation included US Ambassador to Iraq Christopher R. Hill and the US Army Commander in Iraq Raymond T. Odierno.
The meeting discussed a number of issues pertaining to the continuing efforts to form an Iraqi government, it was mentioned.
