Court rules Talabani stays in office until new president is elected

Baghdad, A court handed down a ruling on Thursday that the current president Jalal Talabani should stay in office until a new one is elected.

A statement issued by the office of the president indicated here that chief of the higher federal court Midhat al-Mahmoud informed President Jalal Talabani in a letter in response to a query by the president that according to the constitution - article 72, clause no. 2 - Talabani could stay in office until after legislative elections are over. Once that is done, then a new president will be elected 30 days after the new parliament convenes.

Talabani had asked the court about that issue in view of the convening of the new parliament last July 14.
