Al-Maliki reassures US Congress on speedy cabinet formation

BAGHDAD, July 3 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki asserted here Saturday that his country is resolved upon a speedy government formation and to preserve the gains achieved by Iraq in the field of building up state and democracy.

Al-Maliki made this remark during his meeting with the members of the visiting US Congress delegation led by the Senator and ex-US presidency candidate John McCain, according to a statement by the Iraqi government.

Al-Maliki pointed out that his country seeks to develop its ties with the US in various fields and to activate the strategic framework agreement along with asking support and equipment for Iraqi armed forces and security apparatus.

Al-Maliki also said that he believes that democracy in Iraq was achieved and that it is the best model in the region, according to his own words, making clear that the country is determined upon forming the upcoming government as quickly as possible.

Baghdad is to receive later on the U.S. Vice President Joe Biden in a visit that is most likely to focus on the talks for forming the upcoming Iraqi cabinet.
