Allawi and al-Maliki form two commissions to end political vacuum

Baghdad, The meeting held yesterday between Al-Maliki and Allawi did not address the main dispute between them, namely the allocation of the Prime Ministerial position. However, according to an attendee of the meeting, they did agree upon the formation of two commissions to examine the issue.

"The head of the al-Iraqiya bloc, Iyad Allawi, and the head of the State of Law bloc, Nuri al-Maliki, did not discuss the formation of the new government during their meeting which instead focused on the program of the national coalition government," Kamel al-Dulaimi, a member of the negotiating team present at the meeting said.

"The two delegations agreed on the creation of two specialized committees. The first specialized in governmental reform and the second in ensuring agreement on the formation of the new Iraqi government and the allocation of the Prime Ministerial post."

Al-Dulaimi said that "The two agreed that the commissions would complete their work within the next two days" adding that "another meeting between al-Iraqiya and State of law once the commissions have completed their tasks", had been scheduled.

In the meantime, the debate over the right to form the next government continues. While the Al-Iraqiya bloc confirms its right, based on Article 76 of the Constitution, the two Shiite alliances insist on their right based on the interpretation of the Federal Court.

Since the announcement of the electoral results, Iraq has seen a broad political mobility, particularly among the winning blocs to form a parliamentary bloc that can form the new government. This has resulted in the merger of the State of Law coalition, led by outgoing Prime Minister, Nuri Al-Maliki and the INA, led by Ammar Al-Hakim.
