6/2/2010Obama discusses latest developments in Iraq with top US commander
WASHINGTON, (KUNA) - US president Barack Obama met earlier on Wednesday with the US top commander in Iraq General Ray Odierno at the Oval Office to review security and political progress in Iraq, White House deputy spokesman Bill Burton told reporters.
While the Obama administration schedules to end its military presence inside major Iraqi cities by end of next August, Odierno is responsible for determining the pace of withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.
"General Odierno provided a positive assessment of the current security conditions and the ongoing transition of responsibilities to Iraqi security forces ahead of the change of mission of US forces at the end of August," Burton said.
President Obama and General Odierno also discussed the encouraging step taken by Iraqs Federal Supreme Court to certify election results," according to Burton.
They also discussed the the US support for an inclusive government formation process.
