All eyes are on Monday towards the large conference hall, where the new Council of Representatives held its first session, after the call by the Presidency Council to convene.

Despite the efforts being made by the winning lists in the elections to agree on a compromise formula to quickly form a new government, but politicians and observers had expected to raise the first session to be chaired by the oldest member, a good upper member of the Iraqi National List, to keep open until consensus is reached, to form a national ministry.

The Presidency Council issued a decree yesterday called on the elected Council of Representatives to convene, on the basis of the provisions of Article (54) and item (vii) of Article (73) of the Constitution.

The decree signed by President Jalal Talabani and his two deputies Adel Abdul Mahdi and Tariq al-Hashimi said: "Based on Maardh the Presidency Council, pursuant to the provisions of Article (54) and item (vii) of Article (73) of the Constitution. Decreed as follows:

First: Call elected Council of Representatives to convene on 14/06/2010 that the meeting chaired by the oldest member.

Second: implement this decree from the date of its issuance and shall be published in the Official Gazette ... the following ...

"Article (54) of the Constitution states:« The President of the Republic of the House of Representatives to convene by a presidential decree within fifteen days from the date of approval of the results of general elections, held under the chairmanship oldest member, to elect the Speaker and two deputies, may not be extended for more than the previously mentioned period ».

It is worth mentioning that the Federal Supreme Court has ratified the election results for 2010 on 31 of the last month. In the meantime, Hassan upper member of the Iraqi List, it will chair the first meeting of the new parliament being the oldest member.

Alawi said in a press statement: "The members of parliament, the winners have decided to be president of this meeting, which will be the protocol of course, following the lead of all members of the constitutional oath as members of the new Council of Representatives," adding that he will suspend the meeting directly to the further notice, ie, keeping them open.
