Worries over violence fueled by Iraq's political instability have forced U.S. commanders to reconsider the pace of a major pullout this summer without overstepping a deadline to cut the military's presence by nearly half by the end of August.
Under a plan by the top U.S. commander in Iraq, the military was to begin significant pullouts in May to meet President Barack Obama's goal of 50,000 troops in country by August 31.
But three U.S. officials in Baghdad and a senior military official at the Pentagon with knowledge of the military's plans say that the major drawdown is not expected to begin until June at the earliest. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
