Space Shuttle Atlantis Gears Up For Final Flight
The Space Shuttle Atlantis will have its final flight on Friday. The Space Shuttle Atlantis will be bringing a Russian docking module to the International Space Station.
The Space Shuttle Atlantis will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 2:20 EST. It will be Atlantis's 132nd mission.
"It's been a glorious career," said Mike Moses, head of the shuttle mission management team. "We're not taking a lot of time reflecting back here before launch, but I'm sure once she gets back we'll have a few celebrations. It's a bittersweet time."
President Obama is scrapping NASA's plans to bring astronauts back to the moon. Instead, he wants NASA to focus on heavy lifting rockets that could travel beyond Earth's orbit.
When the Space Shuttle Atlantis returns, it will not immediately become a museum piece. It will be prepped so that it can take off in case a rescue has to be made at the International Space Station.
