Pakistan embassy in Iraq set to reopen
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government has made several ambassadorial appointments, including one for Iraq, indicating that the Pakistan embassy in Baghdad is going to be reopened.
Shah Jamal, currently posted in Glasgow as consul-general, has been designated as ambassador to Iraq.
At present, the ambassador to Iran M B Abbasi, is also accredited to Iraq, holding the non-resident position for Iraq since August last year.
Jamal’s appointment indicates that the embassy in Iraq, which was closed in 2005 after the abduction of its two employees, will be reopened soon. An advance team from the Foreign Office, already in Iraq, has hired a building for the mission.
However, diplomatic sources here suggest that Jamal would not be taking up the new assignment soon. “It appears Islamabad would wait for the formation of a new government in Baghdad,” a senior diplomat said, adding that a new administration might still be months away because of political squabbling in the country.
Another important feature on the list of postings is the extension granted to Shafqat Saeed, the ambassador to France. Saeed is a retired diplomat and is one of the 18 contractual ambassadors.
His case is interesting because he was sent to France with only six months left in his service contract.
