PETALING JAYA: Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is now a Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) director.

The former Prime Minister and eight others were elected at a general meeting of BFA members held ahead of its annual conference in Boao, China’s southern Hainan province. The meeting began yesterday and will end tomorrow.

The eight others are former US Treasury secretary Henry Paulson, former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, former Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, Singapore Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Li & Fung group chairman Victor K. Fung, Hainan vice-governor Jiang Sixian, former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin and Mitsubishi Corporation chairman Mikio Sasaki.

Established in 2001, the forum is a pan-Asian platform for dialogue on key issues affecting Asia and the world.

Abdullah, who is in Hainan for the conference, met Chinese vice-president Xi Jinping yesterday morning, said a statement from Abdullah’s office.

Tomorrow, Abdullah will be one of the panelists for a session titled “Beyond Chiang Mai Initiative: Regional Financial Cooperation in Asia”.

Themed “Green Recovery: Asia’s Realistic Choice for Sustainable Growth”, this year’s conference attracted nearly 2,000 delegates from Asia and other parts of the world.
