Arab League to hold ministerial meeting on peace initiative next May

CAIRO, The Arab League follow-up committee, namely the Peace Initiative Committee, will hold a meeting at the ministerial level of on May 1 at the request of the Palestinian authority, Arab League Undersecretary General Ahmed Ben Helli said here Friday.

The meeting is to discuss results of the efforts made by the U.S. and the steps that should be taken if Israel continues its procrastination on peace efforts, Helli added.

Helli said that this meeting will be held under the supervision of the state of Qatar and in light of the contacts made by Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa with Qatari Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and the committee's head Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabr Al-Thani.

He also pointed out that Moussa communicated, on this regard, with with the foreign ministers of the committee's member states to mull the results of the U.S. efforts in light of the visit made by the U.S. Midest Peace Envoy to the region.

Bin Helli made clear that the Palestinian delegation to the committee is expected to present a detailed report on the U.S. endeavors for pushing forward the peace process.

Meanwhile, Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Palestine and Ocuppied Arab Territories Affairs Ambassador. Muhammed Sobaih said that the Palestinian delegation will brief Arab foreign ministers in the Peace Initiative Committee on the message recently sent by U.S. President Barack Obama to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the outcomes of contacts with Israel and what it contained of Obama's commitment to the two-state solution.

Members of the Arab Peace Initiative Committee includes Palestine, Jordan, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Qatar, Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco, Yemen and the Arab League Secretary General.
