League urges private banks to launch mergers

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Iraqi Banking League on Saturday urged private banks to launch mergers so as to build giant capital and enhance their performance.

“There are talks underway within the league to study experts’ views regarding the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) decision to increase banks’ capital,” Abdulaziz Hassoun told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The CBI had decided in March to up banks’ capital to 250 billion Iraqi dinars piecemeal during the next three years, which caused rates of banks’ shares in the Iraqi Stock Exchange (ISX) to go down due to lack of liquidity in the money market.
