Iran hopes to see coalition gov't in Iraq, ready to host Allawi - Amb.

BAGHDAD - Iran hopes to see current political deliberations and consultations on the Iraqi political scene conclude with formation of a national unity government, Tehran's ambassador here said.

The diplomat also disclosed that his government welcomed Iyad Allawi, whose party won recent nationwide polls, after he requested green light for visiting Tehran.

Hassan Kazemi Qomi, speaking at a news conference during which he portrayed the political stance of his government toward the current post-election political process, said his country favors the formation of a strong, effective, independent, comprehensive and national government grouping parties from various political trends.

He expressed hope that the declaration of the cabinet line-up would be declared soon to embark rapidly on tackling urgent affairs and tasks namely the enforcement of the laws, the reconstruction of the nation and rebuilding good ties with the neighboring states.

"The formation of the Iraqi government will be according to an Iraqi decision in which no-one can meddle with," the diplomat said, praising the parliamentary polls that were held last March.

Qomi made no signal whether Tehran favors a certain party or political leader but stressed that a new government should be able to maintain good ties with the neighboring countries. He also defended Iraqi politicians who have recently visited Tehran.

Iran keeps equal distances with all the parties, he said, noting that the Iraqis have proven during the recent elections that they are ardently committed to democracy.

He indicated that Iran would deal with the country's various political trends, revealed that Iyad Allawi of the Iraqiya List that won majority of votes in the recent polls, requested a visit to Iran and that the officials in Tehran made gestures that he is welcome there.

Allawi had indicated that Iran made no diplomatic or protocol overture toward him after winning the polls.

The ambassador condemned that recent terrorist bombing attacks that targeted the Iranian, Egyptian and German embassies in Baghdad.

Promoting another issue, the ambassador confirmed that his country planned to organize a conference for disarmament and nuclear proliferation. "The objective of the conference is to reflect concerns of the states of the region toward the nuclear arms," he said.
