Talabani holds talks with Egyptian ambassador

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi President Jalal Talabani on Thursday held talks with the Egyptian ambassador in Baghdad, with whom he underlined the importance of having strategic relations with Egypt, according to a presidential statement.

“Talabani received Ambassador Shrief Shahin and his accompanying delegation at his residence in Baghdad,” said the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The president highlighted the general conditions in the country after the parliamentary elections,” it added.

The president asserted that all Iraqi politicians are convinced of the importance of holding strategic relations with Egypt for the good of the two people.

“Egypt is an important Arab country which supported Iraq under tough circumstances and Iraq remembers these favors,” the president noted.

For his part, the Egyptian diplomat said that his government hopes that Iraqis would enjoy security and prosperity, reiterating his country’s support to get Iraq out of the UN Chapter VII.
