Vietnam, U.S. cooperate in nuclear energy sector

Vietnamese and the United States governments signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the nuclear energy sector on Tuesday.

The memorandum was signed by Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Dinh Tien and the U.S. ambassador to Vietnam Michael Michalak.

Under the memorandum, Vietnam and the United States will continue their efforts to develop necessary infrastructures for a safe civil nuclear energy sector.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Dinh Tien said Vietnam is beginning to implement the nuclear energy program to serve socio-economic development.

Vietnam's policy is to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, ensure safety and security and oppose to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, said Tien.

The U.S. ambassador to Vietnam Michael Michalak said the memorandum serves as a necessary basis for the development of peaceful civil nuclear energy of Vietnam.
