Iraq confirms its support for efforts to reduce nuclear arms

Iraq has affirmed its support for the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency in order to reduce nuclear armaments and to attain a world free of nuclear weapons.

The head of the Department of International Organizations in the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Mohammed Almhimidi in a speech to the IAEA board, which concluded in Vienna, on Friday evening, said that his country would respect and implement international obligations to prevent the proliferation and development, production and use of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

He Almhimidi that Iraq has fulfilled all its obligations under Security Council resolutions related to disarmament, which prompted the Security Council to adopt resolution 1762 in 2007 to end the mandate of the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) and the IAEA team in Iraq.

He complained about what he called the restrictions that prevent Iraq from taking advantage of scientific and technological progress, despite all he has done in the elimination of weapons of mass destruction and the implementation of Security Council resolutions related to nuclear disarmament.

In this regard, he pointed Almhimidi messages to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Yukiya Amano, the past two months and included steps by Iraq and will do in this area.

Iraqi envoy also reviewed the achievements of his country since the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1762 for the year 2007 significant progress in matters of Iraq where he completed the task of joining the Treaty Banning the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons) and the deposit of its instrument of accession Iraq has become a member of the 186 in the Treaty for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in 12 February 2009.

As Iraq has also signed an additional protocol to comprehensive safeguards agreement of the International Atomic Energy Agency in October 2008, which is now introducing it to parliament for approval.

In the same context Almhimidi that his country was committed to continuing to provide the Agency with the necessary declarations required in a manner consistent with what would be the case when the endorsement of the Additional Protocol, in addition to ensuring free access to sites and documents as provided for in this Protocol.

He noted that Iraq will apply the additional protocol provisionally pending its entry into force and that the declaration provided during the first 180 days of the date of letter of the Minister of State.

He said the Iraqi government has confirmed its commitment to the latest messages in international treaties and agreements on disarmament and non-proliferation, noting that Iraq had sought to build close relations with the IAEA since the collapse of the former regime in 2003.

The Iraqi representative said his country looked forward to the International Atomic Energy Agency informed the Security Council at the earliest opportunity "and Iraq's full cooperation with the IAEA, adding that the agency supports any decision of the Security Council ends when all remaining restrictions on Iraq by Security Council resolutions related to the disarmament, including resolutions 687 and 707 for the year 1991.

Almhimidi also considered at the end of his speech that such a situation would be much appreciated from Iraq will strengthen the excellent relations existing with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
