Letter dated 11 March 2010 from the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations
In the statement made by the President of the Security Council at the 6279th meeting of the Council, held on 26 February 2010(S/PRST/2010/5), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was requested to inform the Security Council regarding the quality of Iraq’s safeguards-related cooperation with IAEA,including provisional implementation of the additional protocol pending entry into force.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has been receiving excellent cooperation from Iraq in the implementation of its comprehensive safeguards agreement, thus allowing IAEA to effectively and efficiently conduct its safeguards activities. Iraq’s decision to provisionally apply, as from 17 February 2010, the protocol additional to its safeguards agreement pending the protocol’s entry into force is a recent example of its proactive safeguards-related cooperation with IAEA.
Iraq has also been working closely with IAEA in providing joint training to responsible Iraqi officials in order to continue enhancing the technical effectiveness of its national system of accounting for and control of nuclear material. In addition, with the assistance of IAEA, Iraq is in the process of updating its nationallegislation relevant to the application of safeguards.
I should be grateful if you would arrange for the present letter to be brought to the attention of the members of the Security Council.
