U.S. will discuss peace treaty with N. K. after 6-way talks resume: Bosworth

The United States is willing to begin discussions with North Korea on establishing diplomatic ties and signing a peace treaty to officially end the 1950-53 Korean War once the communist nation returns to six-way talks on ending its nuclear programs, a special U.S. representative for North Korea policy said Friday, Yonhap News reported.

"We are also prepared to initiate work on other matters of the September 2005 statement," Stephen Bosworth told a press conference shortly before leaving for Tokyo, referring to a six-party agreement under which the North had agreed to denuclearize in exchange for political and economic concessions.

The special U.S. envoy said there were two important items the U.S. wants to initiate once the six-party talks resume.

"The first and foremost among those is, of course, denuclearization, but we also recognize that it will be important to begin discussions on questions regarding a peace treaty, establishment of diplomatic relations (between the U.S. and N. Korea) and the issues of economic and energy assistance to North Korea," Bosworth said.
