U.S. Energy Secretary plans to visit Saudi Arabia and OPEC members
WASHINGTON (AFP) - was due to fly U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu known his preference for green energy on fossil fuels to the Middle East next week to meet with senior officials in several countries, members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) including Saudi Arabia.
Zhu's visit will come three weeks before the OPEC meeting scheduled for 17 March in Vienna, where countries will review the major oil-producing market conditions and see if by changing the levels of production.
The flight is a rare opportunity for the government of President Barack Obama for the transfer of the U.S. position from the output of OPEC officials in person in the face of rising demand for fuel this year with the recovery of the global economy.
David Sandalo Assistant Secretary of Energy for Policy and International Affairs, said the visit will also include both Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
He told reporters that the Sandalo Zhu will hold "a series of private meetings and public meetings" during his visit but declined to give any details.
