Fri Feb 5, 2010Lavrov: UN Security Council may discuss Iran's case
BERLIN - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday that he may have to members of the Security Council of the United Nations to discuss the issue of Iran if the Islamic Republic did not act in a constructive manner in a dispute over its nuclear activities.
In a joint news conference with German Foreign Minister Guido Vestrwilh in the German capital Berlin, Lavrov said that Moscow might be willing to take a tougher line toward Iran.
He told reporters "in certain situations .. if we have not received a positive response from Iran, we will probably discuss this issue in the UN Security Council," adding that he still hoped to reach a diplomatic solution.
Iran faces a fourth round of sanctions by the UN Security Council over its uranium enrichment, which Western countries believe is aimed to develop a nuclear bomb.
Iran denies this and says its program is for peaceful purposes only.
Earlier Vtsrwilh that Iran is using methods of disabled rather than move to resolve the dispute over its nuclear program.
He told Deutschlandfunk "Over the past two years Iran has repeatedly resorted to prevarication and tricks.
"I played for time and of course we in the international community can not accept a nuclear-armed Iran."
China and Russia have traditionally been more reluctant members of the UN Security Council's other permanent imposition of further sanctions on Iran.
However, recent comments, including a statement by Lavrov on Friday hinted that Moscow might have prepared is on the rise for the approval of the imposition of sanctions.
