* Politics:

BAGHDAD - Meetings with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan were “constructive and very useful”, according to Iyad Allawi, the leader of the Iraqi National List (INL), in statements from Turkey, where he is paying a visit.

NAJAF - Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s visit to Najaf is for mere propaganda within preparations for the forthcoming parliamentary elections on March 7, a local official said on Saturday.

* Security:

ANBAR - Policemen in al-Anbar arrested four persons wanted on charges of involvement in acts of violence that targeted civilians and Iraqi security forces in several areas of the province, a local media official said on Saturday.

KARBALA - Karbala police will deploy 16,000 policemen to protect voting centers during Iraq’s parliamentary election on March 7, 2010, a local security source said on Saturday.

* Economy:

NAJAF - Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki arrived in Najaf on Saturday to meet with the governor and members of the provincial council and also to inaugurate the major al-Mishkhab water project, according to the province’s information director.

BAGHDAD - Iraq and France signed three memorandums of understanding (MoUs), one of them would be to assemble Renault vehicles in Iraq, according to a press release by the industry & minerals ministry on Saturday.

* Sports:

BAGHDAD - The Iraqi Equestrian Sports Federation has named its team for the Indian tournament scheduled to start late next month, according to the federation chairman on Saturday.

BAGHDAD - Iraq’s weightlifting team will camp in the city of al-Kut in early March, 2010, to prepare for the Asian tournament that will take place in Uzbekistan in April, according to the Iraqi weightlifting federation on Saturday.
