Yemen heads G77 and China at UN's headquarters
NEW YORK, Jan. 23 (Saba) - Yemen received on Saturday the presidency of the Group of 77 (G77) and China from the previous president of the group for 2009, Sudan, at the UN's headquarters in New York.
In his speech during the delivering ceremonies, Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi expressed his appreciation of the Asian Group support for the nomination of Yemen to preside over the group.
Al-Qirbi pointed out that this event is coinciding with the UN's marking 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, which is important for the developing countries as they depend on the natural food resources and their economies on the vegetable and fisheries production.
He indicated the group would work in the coming months to finalize the plan of cooperation in this area between the South countries and to present a resolution draft to the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Part States in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to be held in Japan in October of this year.
Yemen would continue its joint efforts to implement the recommendations of the UN's summits on the financial and economic crisis and its impact on the development in the developing countries, al-Qirbi affirmed.
The foreign minister called the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and provide assistance to the developing countries, which are the most affected by the global financial and
economic crisis.
Furthermore, al-Qirbi reviewed challenges facing the world, including climate change phenomenon and threats arising from it not only to development, poverty alleviation, agriculture, and various sectors in developing countries, but also to the survival of many of these countries, which could disappear from the face of the earth.
He urged the international community, especially the developed countries, to develop policies within the UN's Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.

'Qatar committed to support Yemen in presiding over G77'

Qatar reiterated its support for the issues and interests of developing countries in the world, underlining the great and increasing importance of the south-south cooperation and solidarity.
This came in a speech delivered by Acting Charge d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations Salem Mubarak Al Shafi during the meeting of the G-77 and China Chairmanship handover from Sudan to Yemen at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Qatari official expressed Qatar’s hope that 2010 would be a year of increasing the role and presence of developing countries in the international arena.
Al Shafi highlighted the great significance off chairing such an important and sizeable group over a whole year, which represented a “heavy burden and big responsibility”. He noted that Qatar knows and appreciate that matter explaining that it has assumed that responsibility since a time not so long ago. In this context, he pointed out that several factors have helped Qatar during its chairmanship of the G77, to shoulder its responsibility successfully foremost of which were the support and cooperation it received from the group’s member states.
He also reiterated that Qatar is committed to provide full support, flexibility and cooperation to Yemen in order to achieve successful and distinguished leadership to facilitate its mission in achieving harmony within the group and defend its interests at the United Nations and the various international forums.
Al Shafi meanwhile drew attention to the climate change, which is one of the most serious challenges facing developing countries at present, noting in this regard that Qatar attaches particular importance to this issue due to its big effect on the earth planet. He pointed out that Qatar has formally submitted its candidature to host the18th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, hoping to obtain the support of the Group of 77 and China.
Concluding, Qatar’s Acting Charge d’Affaires expressed Qatar’s thanks and appreciation to Sudan for the role it played during its presidency of the Group and congratulated Yemen for assuming the Group’s current presidency.
The handover ceremony of the chairpersonship of G-77 + China to Yemen, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Friday, was attended by United Nations Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon and Chairman of the 64th session of the UN General Assembly Dr Abdul Salam Al Treiki.
Founded on June 15, 1964 by the “Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Countries” issued at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Group of 77 at the United Nations is a loose coalition of developing nations, designed to promote its members’ collective economic interests and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the United Nations.
