Arab League warns of danger of terrorist acts escalation in Iraq
The Arab League warned on Wednesday of the danger of the escalation of terrorist and criminal operations in Iraq during the current period and future until the Iraqi parliamentary elections in March.
Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab League Ambassador Ahmed Ben Helli told reporters that he had extensive contacts with Iraqi officials after a series of blasts in Baghdad yesterday to express solidarity of the Arab League with the Iraqi people.
He said he asked the Iraqis to unite to meet these barbaric acts, which do not have any justification but only to harm the Iraqi people, its security and stability, "especially as Iraq prepares for parliamentary elections and to continue democratic political path." "These criminals are trying to destabilize Iraq, whose climate of stability is supposed to be stable for this election," he said, expressing belief that officials in Iraq and all components of the people will work to address these acts and not causing any differences among them.
Ben Helli said that the Arab League has appointed a senior official from one of its employees to go to Iraq to take over the League's mission in Baghdad on a temporary basis till a League ambassador is permanently appointed there.
