Premier to address UN General Assembly

Premier to address UN General Assembly

September 24, 2009

His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah is expected to give a speech on behalf of the State of Kuwait in an address to the UN General Assembly during its 64th regular meeting tomorrow.

The speech will highlight Kuwait's position on a number of international political and economic issues as well as its views on many issues scheduled for the talk's agenda. This will not be the first time the prime minister has embarked on such a task, having done so previously in February of 2006.

Arriving in New York, the prime minister expressed his delight and pride in representing His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah during the international meetings and fringe congregations, including a debate session and a high-profile meeting on climate change. HH the Prime Minister has also affirmed on numerous occasions that the UN has and will always provide many generous contributions to the international community, particularly in the form of ending global conflict, which threatens the life of innocent people, slows down development and shatters stability and security.

Kuwait became a full-fledged member of the UN General Assembly on May 14, 1963 according to a Security Council resolution issued on May 7, 1963. His Highness the Amir, at the time Kuwait's foreign minister, told global representatives in that particular session that "the State of Kuwait, which gained its independence on June 19, 1961, feels even more relieved after having been able in the period before its acceptance in the UN to gain the trust and acceptance of nearly all the members.

Kuwait aims through the membership to "contribute towards providing a better life for itself and all the nations of the world," he added. Since its acceptance as a member of the UN, Kuwait has been committed to its contributions through various projects for international development.

In 1974, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development was established in aid of poor and under-developed nations. To date, some of these nations have received an overall $12 billion from the fund.

Following the global economic recession, another fund worth $100 million was established by Kuwait to support and develop agriculture in Third World nations. Kuwait has also pledged $150 million to a fund established by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 2007, to conduct research and studies in energy, the environment and climate change.
